Argument Short Response: Grades 6-8
This Quick Write Middle School collection offers students multiple opportunities to respond to compelling prompts about topics of interest to them. Quick Write assignments can be completed in 20 to 30 minutes. Students gain practice writing in the Argument genre as they develop a single paragraph, write in a specific format, or write in response to a current human interest topic, or in response to a video or article based on a topic in the news. Use these Quick Write assignments to motivate students to write in an informal setting, in response to a prompt, or in the Argument genre. Encourage students to share their responses with peers through on- or offline peer review.

In this assignment, students choose from a variety of prompts on compelling topics about which opinions may vary. Students write a well-organized Paragraph that includes a claim stating their position on the topic. Students support their claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence. Quick Writes should provide informal practice and can be completed in approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Assign this activity to students multiple times, asking students to choose a different prompt for each session. This will encourage students to gain practice writing about different topics, in the Argument genre.

Opinion Quick Write
In this assignment, students choose from a variety of prompts that ask them to take a position on a number of interesting topics. Students write as much as they can in the time provided by stating a claim and supporting that claim with reasons and evidence. Evidence should come from credible sources or from their own experience, when appropriate. Quick Writes can be used as an on-demand writing assessment, as a quick and light activity to promote student thought and expression, or as practice writing in the Argument genre.

Our Voice Quick Write
In this assignment, students choose a prompt about a topic in the news, and write a single Persuasive Paragraph in response. Some prompts feature links to articles or videos that discuss news stories of interest to students. Other prompts provide a few sentences about an issue that has been covered widely and about which most students will have an opinion. Use these assignments to motivate students to practice writing in the Argument genre as they develop their positions and to support their arguments with facts and details from source material as well as their own ideas.

Our World Quick Write Formats: Argument

Students follow the prompt to write in a specific writing format about their selected topic. Students begin with an opening sentence and write a claim stating their position on the issue. Students add reasons and evidence to support their claim. Writing about compelling issues gives students practice in argument writing.
